His duty as the shepherd of the recently deceased must keep him very busy, overall, yet even still he finds the time to collect trinkets and to sell them back to us, for reasons only he could understand. I wonder where he finds the time to mill about as sometimes he is prone. The Stygian Boatman is a lot of things, although I am afraid he isn't much for conversation I have tried, though perhaps not persuasively enough. Unlocking the complete Codex Entry requires deepening Zagreus' relationship with Charon. If given Nectar Charon will give you the Bone Hourglass, which increases the duration of items sold at Wells of Charon.Ĭharon's affinity gauge is maxed out at 7 hearts.Ĭharon's favor requires spending at least 10,000 in total at his shop. His hair is white and wavy, similar to Hypnos but not curly like his brother, he exudes smoky purple air coming out of his mouth when he breathes. His long clothes are lined with coins collected from his salary, the obols. He wears a large hat that obscures his face, revealing only one of his eyes that appears a vivid purple light. Charon's sweet and condescending side was revealed as he gave them a ride in his boat all the way from Greece to the House of Hades.Ĭharon appears as a seedy, shadowy floating figure, he always carries his oar, and sometimes uses it as an unlikely weapon. His relationship with Hermes, the messenger, is at least impressive, as Charon even intimidates the inhabitants of the kingdom of Hades.Īlthough he usually does not comply with requests, he may make exceptions, such as when Persephone asked for his help in secretly returning her son.

He is generally inaccessible, even by Underworld standards. When forced to face Zagreus, Charon will demonstrate that he is not a fool and might actually enjoy having someone to fight with, according to Hermes and Nyx.ĭuring transport, Charon remains silent and prefers not to engage in conversation. Nyx explains that even his brothers, including Thanatos, dare not challenge him. However, dialogue with Zagreus and other characters suggests that he is actually quite affable and reasonable, as long as you don't cheat him. He remains a mystery and dislikes being persuaded or bribed, having been tricked and paid dearly for it in the past.

While all the gods (except Chaos) can use Charon's shop to offer their boons to Zagreus, Hermes is the only god with whom Charon has a lasting professional relationship, as seen in dialog with Hermes, as well as in Hermes's Codex Entry.Ĭharon, or simply the "Boatman," is the main figure who transports the souls of the departed to their final destination.

Zagreus often expresses annoyance that Charon apparently either cannot or will not simply ferry him up to the surface in his boat. He doesn't say much, communicating only in groans of various intonations, which Zagreus appears to either understand or enjoy interpreting in humorous ways. He also operates the Wells of Charon which can be randomly found throughout the Underworld. He can be found in chambers with a preview showing a brown sack, usually around the mid-length of each biome before a mini-boss encounter and at the penultimate chamber of a biome, before the boss encounter. In Greek mythology, he required a single obol - placed into the mouth before burial - as payment for his services, or else the soul in question would be left to wander the banks of the Styx for a hundred years.Ĭharon's services in-game are, unfortunately, much more expensive he functions as the game's shopkeeper, selling Zagreus various power-ups, healing items, and boons in return for the obols he collects throughout his escape attempt.
